*Planet Lem and I, Culture Programme

I, CULTURE is the cultural programme of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the
European Union. Almost 400 events to be presented in 10 capitals around the world
will introduce Poland as a modern and unique country with a rich and creative
contemporary culture - a creative engine of Europe.
The core of the I, CULTURE programme rests on five pillars, three of which feature
icons of Polish culture:
· Karol Szymanowski, a Polish musical genius, considered second only to
Fryderyk Chopin. The programme includes an opera by Szymanowski as well as
concert and chamber performances of his music.
· Stanisław Lem, who has been dubbed the Bach of 20th century literature. The
main event is the avant-garde play “Planet Lem” by Teatr Biuro Podróży based
on Lem’s works of fiction.
· Czesław Miłosz, laureate of the 1980 Nobel Prize for Literature. His poetry is to
be interpreted and recited by international stars of film and theatre.
· Guide to the Poles: a series of documentary films presenting an engaging yet
tongue-in-cheek story of contemporary Polish society. It is a recent history of
Poland and Poles conveyed through rock music, fashion, sexual habits,
mountaineering, and play and toys.
I, CULTURE is co-ordinated by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute in co-operation with
Polish Institutes and Embassies, as well as local partners.
The project is financed by the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and
the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
